Dr Abiy And Demeke Re-Elected As Chairperson And Deputy Chairperson Of EPRDF, Respectively

Dr Abiy Ahmed and Demeke Mekonnen have been re-elected as Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
Dr Abiy won 176 of the 177 votes, while Demeke received 149 votes. Dr Abiy Ahmed will lead the ruling party until the next Congress.
EPRDF picked Dr Abiy as its Chairperson last March following the resignation of Hailemariam Desalegn.
The Front EPRDF also concluded its 11th Congress held for three days by issuing a seven-point statement.
Participants of the meeting pledged to discharge their responsibilities to sustain the reform, broaden the political space, and strengthen multi party system.
They also stressed the need to ensure rule of law, fight against anarchism, resolve questions of identity, improve productivity, create stable macro economy, and strengthen relations with neighboring countries.
They further vowed to work their level best to encourage active participation and empowerment of youth and women.
They also hailed the success achieved in the diplomatic sector, especially the peace agreement reached between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The participants also called on academics to conduct problem solving researches as well as urged competing political parties to play constructive role for the unity of the country.
They also urged security bodies to discharge their constitutional responsibilities.
