Eritrean delegation headed by Ambassador Araia Desta, Eritrea’s Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), participated at the 30th AU Summit held from 15 to 29 January in Addis Ababa under the theme “Winning the Fight Against Corruption: Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation”.
At the summit the Eritrean delegation presented a discourse highlighting Eritrea’s stance on relevant issues. On the sidelines of the summit, the Eritrean delegation also met with representatives of states and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest and on strengthening bilateral relations.
The delegation proposed that the Union to be free of dependence on external financial assistance that exposes it to unwarranted interferences, and the budget to be fully funded by the contribution of member states.
The report of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights cited that Eritrea has submitted its report on the implementation of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights. The Eritrean delegation also reaffirmed that Eritrea considers the promotion and protection of human rights as a priority of priorities, and that the Government of Eritrea is committed to strengthen constructive engagement with Commission.
At the end of its session, the summit adopted to establish a common African Air Transport Market, launch African continental Free Trade Area, free movement of people within Africa, election of ten member states to serve a two year term as members of Peace and Security Council of the Union, to hold the AU summit once per year and others.
The summit elected President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to serve as Chairman of the African Union in 2019.
