SMAP INSTITUTE OF TRAINING, EDUCATION AND RESEARCH/CONSULTANCY CELEBRATES ITS 11TH COMMENCEMENT

BY JEMAL IDRIS A.

Drawing its inspiration from its motto “knowledge is power”, SMAP is working hard to create opportunities for its students to gain knowledge and as a continuation of such genuine commitment, it has celebrated its eleventh commencement on 30th December of 2017, with a total of 352 graduates (60% females)who have now been added to the skilled professionals of Eritrea.

In the opening address of the ceremony, the managing director of the institute professor Tesfay Haile underlined that SMAP is proud to report that based on its policy and strategy of giving tailor-made training programs to help participants with their professional development, it gave training to a total of 278(58% females) this year. This include a one year training program to 77(82% females) staff members of the Ministry of Health, a series of training workshops to 170(40% females) staff members of the Ministry of Education in the department of Finance and Administration and an intensive training on Project planning and Management to 31(45% females) staff members of the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students (NUEYS).

Furthermore professor Tesfay indicated that English language improvement course is being given to staff members of the Department of Immigration and Nationality. Besides, a tailor made training is planned for 22 staff members of Azel Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Share Company based in Keren. The training is to be given in Keren and due to start in the first week of 2018.

The eleventh commencement of SMAP has been celebrated under a theme that has been adapted and reversed from a common saying: Behind every successful woman there is a man. The majority SMAP students has been women, and many have won awards for their academic excellence. And this sparkles the fact that SMAP as an institution is playing a huge role in the Empowerment of women in Eritrean. As professor Tesfay stated on his speech, their success obviously is the result of their personal resolve and hard work. But at the same time it can be attributed to the contribution of their parents, husbands, sisters and brothers.

SMAP feels it is in the interest of the whole country and its institutions to upgrade the existing diploma programs to higher levels. This will definitely increase the quality of professional services the institutions can render as they will be able to hire graduates that have better competencies. The graduates will also be able to catch up and be competitive in the ever changing globalized world. By expanding and upgrading SMAP’S academic progress based on the outcome of a pilot, SMAP will be able to open wider educational opportunities for an increased number of Eritreans.

In the last eleven commencements a total 4,005 students have graduated with diplomas and certificate in eight fields of study- Secretarial Science and Office Management, Business Management, Accounting, Pedagogy, ICT, Business English, Business Law and Theatrical Arts in the institute.
