[Video] Asmara Candidature for UNESCO's World Heritage City - PARIS 2017
H.E. Hanna Simon, Ambassador of the State of Eritrea to France & Permanent Delegate to UNESCO hosted Exhibition & Reception on the occasion of the candidature of the city of Asmara for inscription in UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Eritrea's current application to UNESCO for Asmara's inclusion on the World Heritage List goes beyond simply pursuing international recognition for its cultural assets. While Asmara boasts outstanding modernist architecture and urban planning, it also has an exceptional testimony of the universal aspiration for and attainment of national self-determination.
Even more importantly, Asmara's nomination presents an opportunity critical reflections on cultural relations and heritage globally, it is an opportunity to promote stability and prosperity on a local level. Asmara has the potential to contribute to UNESCO's global strategy of redressing the comparative under representation of African and modernist sites on the World Heritage List.
Asmara will cease to be a secret of modernist architecture. In this atmosphere of tolerance, which is also known as Asmara style, the various cultures, religions, and ethnic groups live together in the capital of this East African state, which became independent in 1991.
In 2001 the Eritrean government decided to protect the entire city center of Asmara as a national monument. Asmara is Africa’s City of Dream, having survived the troubles of the Second World War, 40 years of Ethiopian occupation, and a thirty-year war of liberation almost unscathed, the city today is home to one of the largest ensembles of modernist architecture anywhere in the world.
