The World Heritage Committee to inscribe Asmara on the UNESCO World Heritage sites list
Asmara to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site |
The World Heritage Committee has adopted the recommendation and draft decision to inscribe Asmara on the UNESCO World Heritage sites list. Asmara's nomination will be examined by the Committee at its 41st session that is to be held from 2-12 July, 2017, in Krakow, Poland.
The European Union is contributing to the conservation of Asmara's unique cultural and architectural heritage, in the framework of the EU programme for Local Authorities. The EU has, in fact, signed in December 2016 a 2 year's cooperation programme with the Asmara Heritage Project (AHP), part of the Department of Public Works Development of the Central Region Administration (Zoba Maekel) aiming at building the capacity for safeguarding Asmara's historic urban environment.
The EU funded programme includes trainings, capacity building and awareness raising components and will also support the finalisation of the Urban Conservation Master Plan, which is among the key recommendations of the World Heritage Committee.
The European Union is confident and looking forward to the positive outcome of the deliberations that will take place in Poland in July.
