Former Ugandan vice president meets President Isaias, seeks Eritrea's support for AU Chair

Uganda’s Special Envoy, Hon. Cecilia Ogwal, has today met the Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki to popularise the bid for former Uganda vice president, Dr Speciosa Wandira Kazibwe for the chairperson of African Union Commission.
According to Hon. Ogwal who delivered a message from Uganda on Dr. Speciosa Wandira-Kazibwe candidature, President Afwerki said, “support to Eastern Africa’s candidate is an obligation, a commitment to moving Africa forward”.
According to a statement issued by the Head of Communications for Uganda’s AU Chairperson bid, Ms Sarah Kagingo, Ogwal also met the Eritrean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Osman Saleh at a countryside office outside Asmara.
If successful, she would replace outgoing chairperson Dlamini Zuma in the July 2016 elections to be held in Kigali, Rwanda.
Dr Kazibwe, 60, faces competition from Agapito Mba Mokuy, 51, the foreign minister of Equatorial Guinea, and his Botswana counterpart, Dr Pelomi Venson-Moitoi, 65.
Specioza is known internationally for her works as member and acting chair of AU’s Committee of the Wise, and as the United Nations Secretary-General’s special envoy on HIV/Aids for Africa.
She was the first woman to serve Uganda as a vice president.
