Lord Eric Avebury Obituary
The Embassy of the State of Eritrea to the United Kingdom & Ireland wishes to convey its sincerest condolences to the family of the life-long friend of Eritrea Lord Eric Avebury. The Liberal Democrat peer who devoted his parliamentary life in fighting for civil liberties and justice has died at the age of 87 following a long battle of blood cancer.
Lord Avebury joined the House of Lords in 1971 and was the chairman of the Eritrea Support Group in the 1970s and relentlessly campaigned for self determination and independence of Eritrea. After his first visit to Eritrea in 1981, he joked of staying at the ‘Nakfa Hilton’ where he met with the EPLF members and witnessed for himself the disastrous effects of the long war with Ethiopia.
Following the border dispute with Ethiopia, Lord Avebury was an ardent supporter of the implementation of the Eritrea Ethiopia Border Commission decision and actively pursued the signatory bodies to abide by it. He also spearheaded debates in the House of Lords that shed light on the current border situation where Ethiopia is still illegally occupying sovereign Eritrean territory.
Lord Avebury is survived by his wife Lindsay Stewart and his four children.
