A maiden trip from to Ireland from Ethiopia has come with some unexpected baggage – as eight of those on board have applied for asylum here.
An investigation is now taking place after it emerged that a group of passengers on Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET50 didn’t head for the party at the gate that was planned to celebrate the new route last Saturday – instead going straight to immigration to claim refugee status.
As tourism chiefs and VIPs celebrated at Dublin airport immigration officers had to attempt to ascertain the identities of the ‘refugees’ – as they had arrived with no ID cards or travel documents.
"If their application is successful it could come at a price of around €1m to the Irish taxpayer, as the cost of assessing someone’s application normally runs to around €120,000-€150,000."
Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe was supposed to be on board the onward journey to LA, but had cancelled his plans after news of the Berkeley tragedy.
Irish Ambassador Aidan O’Hara and the Ethiopian Airlines chief executive were on board, however, and were pictured cutting a cake at the celebration party.

Really? This is news to an Eritrean audience, why?

Just Saying is another angry Ethiopian/Tigrayan troll trying to deflect the news. The mass exodus of Ethiopians has been ignored for too long. You can try to spin this news anyway you like, at the end of the day, around 1.1 million Ethiopians are fleeing their country each year. Some hijack Ethiopian Airline planes like the co-piolt from last year; others leave the country for Europe by claiming they are Eritreans (most Eritrean refugees in Europe are Ethiopians). Others flee to Yemen to get to Saudi (over a million Ethiopians in Yemen as we speak). Others head for South Africa (300,000). While tens of thousands of others flee towards Kenya, Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti and Eritrea annually. So the mass exodus of Ethiopians is the largest in Africa, yet it's the least talked about.

ReplyDeleteSilly Weyane Tigray thought stopping EAL flights to Asmara was going to be its trump card in isolating Eritrea and having its economy collapse.
You should run the news story but with a different picture. Any Ethiopian symbol on Eritrean website makes people like me angry.

ReplyDeleteI asked madote once before to edit out a picture advertizing EAL, posted by someone, which was totally irrelevant to the article then being discussed but I was totally ignored. Madote, should be more sensitive to its readers views and concerns. Even if I had gotten an explanation as to why it's ok not to cancel the input, I would've been satisfied.

If you use anything that has Ethiopian name on it we demand you to use any log that has a positive image about Ethiopia. you will never stop from using any negative image to tarnish Ethiopia. why stop now? As I said last time, Eritrea without Ethiopia is nothing. The only way Eritrea can be on the news is, if Eritrea shadows Ethiopia.

I know around 10 ethiopians who were staying with me in khartum. We use to love each other even we ask about each other until now. They never wanted to go to libya but eritreans. They say heroism is with eritreans when ever tough challenge comes they face it i dont know why but they wanted to be in the trip with Eri. All of them they arrived safely got asylum, even most of them they returned back to take ppl with marriage for money. I am glad for them coz they just wanted to change thier lives and they did. Even eritreans got cought on the way they say ethiopian so no problem its only getting opportunity & only the smart once use it. Its better while ppl form other country are using it

ReplyDeleteYes, You guys did a lot of bad things to Ethiopia, still walking tall, though. The best airline in Africa is one example, not to mention about 10% economic growth for a decade. A blessing in disguise. As we diversify our economy in the next ten years we might need your port because all the neighboring countries ports would be congested. I know Eritrea's economy is based on natural resource which is going to depleted in one generation. As Eritrea's natural resources deplete the only income Eritrea is going to have is from leasing ports which only Ethiopia can use. Now, if that is the case Eritrea is back to square one, dependent on Ethiopia. Before I forget Eritrea order about 40 speed boats from Spain and Daniel Ortega is asking for forgiveness in USA. I can see a partnership in the making here.

Do you know EAL are stakeholder in West Africa part with Asky Airline(49% share) and in South Africa Part with Air Malawi(49% share) both are profitable b/c of EAL take the Management and technical part of these airline. In the near EAL are negotate to esatblish ni central Africa part.
These all are the success of Ethiopian Airline even if you don't want to hear and see.
