Ethiopia and Horn of Africa Conference [Updated with schedule]

Ethiopia and Horn of Africa Conference

Amanuel Biedemariam

The Ethiopian Satellite Television and Radio (ESAT) Service, in collaboration with Ethiopian academics and pro-democracy advocates is hosting a two day symposium on, “Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa: Prospects for a Stable, Democratic and Prosperous Future” which will be held from May 9-10, 2015 at the Sheraton National Hotel, 900 Orme Street, Arlington, VA.

Ethiopia, the Horn of Africa and the prospects for peace and stability is also Eritrea’s interest. ESAT and the pro-democracy advocates in the Diaspora have been engaging Eritreans in the Diaspora for over a decade. In the past such an attempt has been made to involve Eritreans and Ethiopians in such an exchange with limited success.

After ESAT’s visit and subsequent interview with President Isaias Afewerki; the enthusiasm and energy within the Ethiopian Diaspora and amongst Ethiopians all over has been palpable. Today, Ethiopians are eager to engage and move forward with the hope of saving their country and creating a stable, peaceful and prosperous region.

This provides an opportunity for all stake holders to redefine and reshape attitudes, to bring ideas and educational materials that can help foster an environment conducive for future relations based on mutual respect, territorial integrity and with the interests of all involved in check.

This is also a great opportunity for Eritreans and Ethiopians to come together to showcase their unique cultures and traditions through song and dance. To that end, Eritrean Musicians will take part in the cultural event to showcase some of Eritrea’s traditional and modern music.

This is a unique moment and opportunity for Eritreans and Ethiopians to come together in purpose with the right intention. The success and the example this platforms establishes can set a precedent not only for Eritreans and Ethiopians but for the greater Horn of Africa region that desperately needs it.

This is a result of arduous journey that developed over time based on trust, communication amongst Ethiopians and Eritreans that worked quietly to get here with a mindset of expanding this endeavor throughout the US and Europe.

The presenters representing Eritrean perspectives are Elias Amare, Senior Fellow of the Peace Building Center of The Horn of Africa to present a paper on, "Eritrea and Ethiopia: Long-term Prospects for Building Durable Peace, Cooperation and Integration in the Horn of Africa." Professor Asmarom Legesse will present a paper to set the record straight about False Labels that they try to attach with Eritrea and Sophia Tesfamariam will discuss Eritrean women during and after independence.

Please come and join this timely forum and musical occasion that can open the possibilities of a better understanding and future relations that is geared to benefit all.

  1. This is a positive move towards peace, understanding and mutual benefit for both nations Eritrea and Ethiopia in particular and the whole Horn of Africa in general. If our Ethiopian friends are honest and ready they can learn a lot from Eritrea how they can work out Self-Reliance and independency from the West. In my opinion, that's the only way they could succeed and organize their youth for development and prosperous future. God/Allah bless both nations.

  4. Yes, I am also glad to witness an event.....an event that will transition from Woyane to Amhara rule. As usual, the revolving door rotates between the two, but once in Menelik Palace they will be up to the same games.

  5. NO CHOICE FOR OUR NORTHERN NEIGHBOURS .THIS IS THE ONLY WAY OUT,A GOOD TURNING POINT..IF..IT COMES TO FRUTION. FYI ESAT DOES NOT REPRESENT ETHIOPIA AND ETHIOPIANS.

  6. I think they'll learn from the past mistakes, i would give opportunity to change, otherwise if we stack in the way you put it, we could stay forever as mistrustful neighbours..

  8. Nick? Thanks?
I am going off of history, we have gone from one to the other. If we want real peace, it would make logical sense to ally with ethnic populations that want actual freedom from the habesha imperial mindset....like the Gambella, Oromo and Ogaden Somali. People who actually will leave us alone. Just a thought.

  9. WHO SAID? IT MAY NOT REPRESENT WOYANI/AGAME LIKE YOURSELF, BUT TO OTHERS IT MAY. LET OTHER ETHIOPIANS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.

    ReplyDelete
  10. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE WOYANI/AGAME, MONSIEUR;WE ALL ARE ETHIOPIANS.REST ASSURED.

  11. YOU THINK YOUR SNEAKY HUH, YOU CAN NEVER TEACH THE GREAT LEADERS OF ERITREA HOW TO DIALOGUE, IT IS THE BACKWARD AGAME THAT NEEDS TO LEARN.

  12. IF YOU ALL ARE ETHIOPIANS, WHY NOT TREAT THE REST OF ETHIOPIA EQUALLY RATHER THAN COMMIT GENOCIDE, RAPE, ETC. YOUR A JOKE. YOUR PROBABLY ONE OF THE SEVERAL THOUSANDS TPLF HIRED INTERNET ASSASSINS. YOUR WOYANI/AGAME/TPLF IS HISTORY, THEIR TIME IS NUMBERED AND SO IS YOURS.

  13. To begin with, we eritreans made a grave mistake by declaring independence. I think we need to work for unity with our ethiopian brothers. Look at our names,; on the ethiopian side, ermias legese and on te eritrean side amare legesse. Both are leggese. We also have elias amare ( amare is an amharic name as far as i know) representing eritrea. Kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk this is eally funny. Please let us stop this nonesense. we are simply one. We need to work towards unity. Soffia tesfamaria was born and raised in ethiopia. she speaks more amharic than tigrigna kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk what a crazy world

  14. Coming from a supporter of Higdef, that would comical if it was so sad to what is happening to the people of Eritrea

  15. What's interesting is that Eritrea has so many problems of her own that it's sad the government has decided that Ethiopia and Ethiopian internal politics should be her main concern. The fact that thousands of Eritreans are leaving Eritrea a month, or the fact that thousands have died, been kidnapped, raped and held for ransom isn't the issue that the government choices to address, no, rather sweep it under the rug and discuss Ethiopia. But I guess you can't expect more from a government who's head is from Tigray.

This all home work is given to the ginbot 7 through the eritrean established isat to cheat the ethiopian people. But i think now the majority of the ethiopin people thinks more than the dictator ISAYAS!

  30. Its about time to face the fact about Ethiopia. And this is not only for Ethiopia but to the whole East Africa.
"This is an indication of the Ethiopian potential place in the world and Africa"
When you are less poor others are happy to help as opposed to when you are destitute and poor. The value of Ethiopians seems going up.. This is the consequences of prudent political and Economic policies of EPRDF.
    regards,

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't think the Ethiopians like to be muzzled like higdef has done to the Eritrean people.
