Yemeni Foreign Minister Lied to CNN about Former President Saleh seeking refugee in Eritrea
Yemeni Foreign Minister Riyadh Yaseen
During a recent interview with CNN correspondent Becky Anderson, Yemen's Foreign Minister Riyadh Yaseen said former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh was in Sana'a and is seeking refugee in Eritrea.
"I think he is in Sana'a and he is trying to escape." said FM Yaseen.
Asked where is Saleh trying to flee, Yaseen replied: "He is trying to get to Eritrea....where he has lots of land".
This 'news' was surprising to say the least. Throughout his rule, Saleh supported various Eritrean Islamic terrorists groups against the Eritrean government, ordered his military to attack Eritrean troops on the Hanish islands and openly sided with arch-foe Ethiopia over its occupation of Eritrean territory.
Furthermore, it's common knowledge that Saleh was seeking refugee in Ethiopia, which has been reported extensively in Western media, including by CNN. According to a report by the MiddleEastMoniter, Ethiopia accepted his request on the condition he does not participate in politics.
So either FM Yaseen is showing a fundamental lack of understanding of the region or he is deliberately trying to inject Eritrea into his country's crises at the behest of Ethiopia. Based on his government's previous actions, the latter seems be the more plausible answer.
On June 23, 2014, Andargachew Tsige, an Ethiopian opposition leader, was detained at Sana’a airport, while travelling from Dubai to Eritrea on his UK passport. He was swiftly handed over to the Ethiopian authorities, where he now faces routine torture and a looming execution.
The Yemeni regime kidnapped Andargachew and handed him over to Ethiopia knowing this would cause unnecessary tension with Eritrea and the United Kingdom. So this latest disinformation of pulling Eritrea into their primitive sectarian squabbles should be seen through the context of appeasing Ethiopia.

The purpose of this is to make Sunni Arab governments (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, UAE, Algeria, etc) distance themselves from Eritrea, and make the SEMG link this nonsense with Eritrea, so it can gain legitimacy, at least in name. That's Ethiopia's goal.

ReplyDeleteYemen is surrounded by Sunni countries. For Iran to reach Yemen safely is to use Eritrea. So, for Iran having a base in Eritrea make sense and they planned this a long time ago. Eritrea gave the base hopping the arrangement would reduce Ethiopia's military threat on Eritrea. But Iran got the base and Eritrea caught in the middle since they didn't figure out how that arrangement is going to influence Arab Sunni and Shia relationship.

As a Foreign Minister of Yemen, at the very least he is expected to know the geography of countries around Yemen. Let alone the politics of the area, this man does not know where Eritrea or Ethiopia or for that matter he does not seem to know where Saudi Arabia is. I think this man thinks Eritrea is somewhere between Iran and Afghanistan.

Even if you had lived in Eritrea for some time, it is impossible to learn much about Eritrea and Eritreans for an Ethiopian. Whatever you learned would have been one sided and biased. In other words, you would have learned a lot of untruth (mis-learned) about us.

ReplyDeleteBlind support? That is your own judgment, fine! I support Eritrea and respect the blood spent to purchase its independence. No government is ever perfect in all aspects and no government pleases all its citizens. To the extent that there is no other entity that has proved itself able, willing and determined to preserve what thousands have fallen for and the fulfillment of our fathers' and forefathers' wishes I support the Eritrean government without reservation. To the extent that the preservation of the hard won independence is the priority of priorities, I am not willing nor ready to discuss anything else especially in these forums. To your surprise we do discuss other issues amongst ourselves even in the presence of government officials. The only difference is that the questions and suggestions are put forward in a respectful manner.

Here is what you said, "YOU SHOULD HAVE ASKED THE INDIVIDUAL WHO POSTED SAYING"HE WAS UNDER HOUSE . . . " The next commentator mentioned "RORA" as the originator of the rumor! That is how I arrived at the conclusion that "the individual who posted" means "RORA!" Apart from that I still stand by my view.
Do not talk about death and things or that sort. It is good that you visited your friends. As you have had your own experience to cherish and perhaps to regret (we are all human), you should know that you have your own biases as well. Those biases stand out in your comments. Just my observation!

The rest of your comment is based on your own surely biased understanding of a matter in which you have no (some) steak--as you claim! Eritreans have all their steaks on their country's success!
Go on interpreting Eritrea and its current situation as you wish. Do not forget that (given that you are honest, of course) you are evaluating the situation and taking your stand assuming you were Eritrean. Obviously, you are not nor would you want to be one. You are informed by your limited exposure as an observer and mostly from the point of view of an Ethiopian elite, a section of the Ethiopian population that has been tacitly and explicitly collaborating with their governments in the annexation and prosecution of the war against its movement for independence. You stands are most probably based on the years of propaganda from your governments including the current one--it shows in your posts here! You are claiming to have visited Eritrea several times (whether that is true or not is another matter) and implied that your visits have informed your stand. We can argue about your observations--whether they are colored by your biased opinion or not, including by the opinion of the people you visited.
I am speaking as an Eritrean who has a personal steak (not material, my identity and the welfare of my people) in Eritrean affairs, there is no other Eritrean organization that stands to protect the hard won independence of the country. All others are collaborators of the same entity that is hellbent on destroying it!
I know you do not think so. You have told me in various ways. My stand matters, yours does not--simply because you are not Eritrean! I might add-- you know you have no business in Eritrea's destiny.
For your information, things are changing. Arrogant Western policy makers are watching the fruit of their reckless policies. They have not done anything but worsen situations in our region and elsewhere against themselves. Soon, they will have to learn that they cannot destroy Eritrea for Ethiopia's sake.
