Eritrea's Bumper Harvest Undermined With Lies

When the International Food Policy Research Institute released its Global Hunger Index in mid-October, Eritreans were surprised to find their country ranked second among countries with alarming levels of food insecurity. Even more troubling, the institute claims 34.8 percent of Eritrean children are underweight.

Curious to see their data source for child malnutrition in Eritrea, an Eritrean Ph.D student contacted IFPRI. He was informed by Yisehac Yohannes, an Ethiopian researcher for the organization, that the prevalence is an estimate that he, along with a few of his colleagues, predicted from a regression model and not obtained from survey data.

Yohannes added, "our estimate suggests there has been very little - if any - change in child underweight prevalence in Eritrea since 2002. The latest available survey data from 2002 indicated that 34.5 percent of children under five were underweight in Eritrea."

In other words, Yohannes believes between 2002 and 2012/2014, Eritrea's prevalence underweight didn't stay the same, or even decrease, but increased. All the while, the World Health Organization data in Eritrea shows child mortality decreased by 67%.

It's also hard to believe Yohannes' claim of "little - if any - change" in Eritrea's prevalence underweight since 2002 (which was taken during the worst drought since independence), when Eritrea has - since then - spent hundreds of millions of dollars to be food self-sufficient by building hundreds of micro and medium sized dams; purchasing modern farming equipments and implementing modern farming techniques to increase output. Therefore, it's almost without question Eritrea is in a better position than it was in 2002, which would ultimately translate to some reduction in the prevalence of underweight children in the country.

Even if we simply focus on satellite imagery showing seasonal weather patterns for this year [see image below], one can see Eritrea is experiencing "favorable" agriculture production prospects due to good rains, which again, contradicts IFPRI's guesstimation that Eritrea is facing alarming levels of food insecurity.

Harvesting of the 2014 main season crops is expected to start at the beginning of November and, according to satellite-based monitoring, production prospects in main agricultural areas of Debub, Maekel, Gash Barka and Anseba zobas are favourable.

The 2014 “kiremti” rainy season had a timely onset at the end of June and, especially by August onwards, has been characterized by abundant and well-distributed precipitation amounts in most cropping areas, in some cases continuing until the second dekad of October.

This isn't to say Eritrea is 100% food secure. It still has a long way to go. But to deny, or simply gloss-over the accomplishments it has made since 2002, and give the impression that things are actually worse is outright preposterous, if not sinister.

Eritrea has experienced good rains in its agriculture producing areas of the country.

  2. Madote, with all due respect, the way you placed the heading serves the very objective, purpose and goal of the detractors. I would have headlined the peace as Eritrea's bumper harvest undermined with lies...or something like that

  4. Isn't Yisehac Yohannes a Woyane dude? That itself speakes volumes about the credibility of the information. Thank you for finding out the source and the basis of the information.
This is world has gone side ways. We have habitually thieves, beggars and liars as bearers and witnesses of the truth.

  5. Woyane are known to lie. What's new? What is dangerous here is, this is supposed to be a data based on a study, not on guess. What they can't digest is Eritrea's independence and self-reliance. No one believes anything that comes out of woyane's mouth anymore. It is the reputation stupid!

  7. Ladies and gentlemen,

IFPRI also has a regional office in Addis Ababa. A deligent inquiry would most likely find that the report originated from there! It would even be curious if those assigned in the said regression estimation were Ethiopian and from the Weyane's Ethnicity. I wonder if the Yohannes guy is in Ethiopia or here in Washington DC. If he is in Ethiopia, I bet he would not risk his neck to write honestly if he is asked by a Weyane, unless of course, he himself is interested in a false report!

  9. The reason why 34.8 percent of the Eritrean children are underweight is that they don't get raised by their parents due to the fact either their parents are in the endless national slavery or have left the country just to find a better place where they can petition their children and have a bright future. Of course, missing your parents is worse than being malnourished.

  12. Our people need PEACE, ELECTIONS, some sense of normality in their
daily lives, RESPECT for their HUMAN RIGHTS (both from their non-elected leader and gvt as well as from the International Community). The Eritrean people have the right to water and electricity especially while Eritrea's resources are being UNACCOUNTABLY guzzled by local politicians and foreign companies alike. Our children too have the right to education and futures devoid of poverty, exile, war and oppression. Our women too have the right to lives free of domestic violence, war and political turmoil.

FIRST things FIRST have the sense to make peace with our neighbour Ethiopia, DIA! Additionally, we the people of Eritrea DEMAND that our right to democracy and elections be respected. We demand the right to live peacefully on OUR own ANCESTRAL LANDS. We demand an end to the heinous and recurring Tigrayan political culture of warlords and oppressors.

    Wered DIA, wered anta mewaredi!

    Awet n'Hafash Eritra!

  13. The main problem is that the childish policy of Issayas Afeworki, since 2001. EPLF was good at communicating with outside world and many journalists were invited to MEDA to witness things with their own eyes and report to the world. That was the time when decision was made by group of people instead on one man as it is today.
Let them in the country and see with their own eyes, provide them data which they can visit.and verify. Just keep them away from military sites. If they still report "wrong" then one can complain. But right now the only option they have is to use old data and estimate the rest. If the dictator has nothing to hide , why doesn't he let them in and report freely?. From what I have seen before I left, I choose to be live the report estimation. Expect those with family abroad very few people afford the current food prices.

  14. The other day I heard the administrator of the Southern Zone of Eritrea on the VOA saying that almost all farming lands in that zone were plowed by tractors. So, oxen in that zone are not accomplishing their responsibilities of farming the high lands? All oxen to EraEro now!!!! :)))))
If this is real, Eritrea deserves to be applauded for its contribution in respecting animal rights but slapped for its absurd violence of human rights. Eritrea must be for its citizens first and animals come second. Is there any thing that I do not understand here? lol

  21. Fedup, please fade away. no one is interested in your shallow analysis. Them? who are them? journalists? They hold the last word? like the bible or Quran? come on brother, if you are Eritrean, wake up! Eritrea is not defined by drive by media journalists, it is defined by us Eritreans. You feel better if fernji write good about Eritrea: true or false? Well you can spend money to buy a PR firm like woyane and down hill from then on.

  22. Actually Eritrea was given 6 month of survival after the war ended.

    ReplyDelete
  23. On the contrary, it was Eritrean regime supporters like you who were/are constantly predicting the downfall of the weyane regime. Mind you this was not a decade ago, but more than a decade and a half ago starting from 1998. Every event in Ethiopia was proof that the TPLF regime was about to fall every single year. Just to give you a clue here is the list:

1998 (start of the war):TPLF regime will fall since it has no public support and the people will not rally behind it and Shaebia is better on the battlefield etc.
1999(Badme captured by TPLF):TPLF regime will fall since they paid such a heavy price for Badme etc.
2000(A QUARTER of Eritrea's territory occupied by TPLF and Eritrean regime agrees to a buffer zone 25 miles wide COMPLETELY inside Eritrean territory): TPLF regime will fall since it cannot explain to the public why the war is over and Ethiopia does not have her so called 'natural outlet to the sea'.

2001(Private press closed down in Eritrea, G15 heroes arrested and complete tyranny of isaias starts):TPLF regime will fall since it's enablers inside Eritrea are now taken out (Petros Solomon, Brigadier-General Ogbe Abraha etc.) etc.
2002(EEBC awards Badme, Tsorona to Eritrea and Zalambessa and Bure to Ethiopia):TPLF regime will fall since the people will overthrow it because it waged a war for nothing etc.
2005(Ethiopian regime mows down 200 people in Addis and arrests thousands after post-election demonstrations):TPLF regime will fall since the people have finally stood up and are ready to overthrow the regime once and for all.
2006(Ethiopian regime invades Somalia overthrowing the ICU):TPLF regime will fall since it cannot fight a war on multiple fronts etc.

2009(UNSC approves a weapons embargo and other sanctions on Eritrea): TPLF regime will fall since the sanctions will make Eritrea self-reliant etc.
2010(The Ethiopian regime steals the election with 99.8% of the seats after committing massive fraud):TPLF regime will fall since the people will not accept the outcome and will come out in the streets again etc.
2012(Ethiopian dictator Meles dies from a brain tumor in Brussels):TPLF regime will fall since it cannot function without it's strongman and the other senior members will fight for the top post of prime minister etc.

    2014:TPLF regime will fall since...

You can fill in the dots. Perhaps I can give you a hand. TPLF regime will fall since Ethiopian Airlines has turned into Ebola Airlines according to the owner(s) of this site. Never mind Ethiopian Airlines is one of the fastest growing airlines in Africa, it flies to more and more destination and has a rapidly expanding fleet. All that matters is the imaginary bad picture that can be portrayed in this regard. Never mind that Eritrean Airlines is a complete failure due to isaias. Thanks to Kibrom Dafla (former head of Eritrean Airlines from 2004-2009) we know that isaias micromanaged (and thus mismanagement) Eritrean Airlines into the state it's in today. And you would agree with me that Eritrean Airlines is not really exactly shining now is it?

  24. What is funny is that despite billions of aid woyane is still receiving food aid in 2014 to some 13 million people. Woyane has balkanized the Ethiopian people that lived for generations in harmony. Killed and kills hundreds every year. In whose calculation is that 5% of a minority rules over the majority of a people in a country that despises woyane? Only in Woyaneland! They are believing their own BS and try to lecture you about human rights in Eritrea. Tehetena yehatet.

If Iran with all its oil money couldn't make it isolated, how do you expect Eritrea without any friend or oil money will make it in isolation?. At the end of the day most media outlets around the world are better than Eri-TV (actually Issayas TV).

  32. Ouch Mister Afewerki (interesting name bytheway lol). You really hit the nail on the head. These liars and desperados have been predicting the downfall of the Ethiopian government from 1998 and now look where Eritrea is and Ethiopia is?

Eritrea (and its airlines too lol) is sanctioned, isolated, running out of young people and under the tyrannical rule of one madman. Ethiopia (and its airlines) is one of the fastest non-oil growing economies in Africa, is building a vast road network, a vast railway network (over 5000KM), huge power projects (over 10.000 MW) and is solidifying trade relations with its neighbours (Djibouti, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan). Ten years ago wise people were predicting that the madman in Asmara would isolate Eritrea even further and bring the country on a conflict path with the international community. That is one prediction that did come true mister dog. You can bark all you want (from your comfortable home in the west, ohh the hypocrisy), but you can't bite. lol

Don't open your stinky mouth as if you care for the country. By the way you stole a public money and left the country.

  39. Yes, we heard you the first time! You are proponents of "Ethnic Purity." How does it matter? You Weyanes and their lackeys must have so much hatred to yourselves that you believe that you deserve to be hated! If not what is the point of pointing your finger to someone whom you allege has some "Tigraway-ness?" You may think you are politiking, but you are revealing your super-Nazi mentality!

The joke is that you speak about democracy, human rights and other lofty ideas without any shame. How many times will you have to be told no one considers you people as an alternative to Shaebia, no matter how bad Shaebia is?!!?
