Isaias Afwerki Awards 3 million in Nakfa to Eritrean cyclists
Nov. 28, 2011 (ASMARA) — President Isaias Afwerki awarded nearly 3 million in Nakfa ($200,000 USD) in prize money to be distributed among Eritrean cyclists, coaches, the National Cycling Federation and reporters from the Ministry of Information.
At the award ceremony hosted at the Asmara Place Hotel, the president congratulated the Eritrean cycling team on their victories scored at the 7th annual African Cycling Championship held in Eritrea between Nov. 9-13th.
The President cautioned the cycling teams not to be complacent with their impressive achievements and to continue to set their goals even higher. He further called on the Eritrean Cycling Federation to promote and advance cycling in all regions of Eritrea.
The ten member men's team received 110,000 Nakfas each ($7,333 USD), with their coach Samson Solomon receiving 80,000 Nakfas ($5,333 USD). The 8 member women's team were awarded 50,000 Nakfas each ($3,333 USD), and their coach Musie Ashel earning 70,000 Nakfas ($4,667 USD). Additional prizes were also given to the Eritrean National Cycling Federation to the tune of 1,100,000 Nakfas ($73,333 USD) and a number of reporters from the Ministry of Information were awarded with cash prizes for their excellent coverage of the event.
