Construction of Mendefera Stadium Underway
Engineer Berekt Michael, a member of Debwin Construction Company, revealed to state media
his company has started construction of a stadium in Mendefera with a capacity of seating 10,000 spectators. Costing around 8 million Nakfa ($533,333 USD) to build, it is expected to be completed by late 2012. Other projects being built by Debwin Construction Company in Mendefera include a 19 million Nakfa ($1,266,000 USD) construction project of 50 classrooms and a cafeteria for nurse assistant students.
It is to be noted, a joint Eritrean and Qatari renovation project had been underway in Asmara Stadium since 2009. At a cost of $6 million dollars, Asmara stadium has been fitted with a new modern Guest Hall and a VIP lounge, along with new seats, speakers, and turf. The renovation project was inaugurated in early June of 2011 and was attended by sports officials from Qatar and Eritrea, along with ministers and invited guests. During the inaguration cernomy, Eritrea's Red Sea Boys and Qatar's Army football teams played a friendly match, to which the Red Sea Boys secured a 1-0 victory.
In addition to the Mendefera stadium, Eritrea plans on building three more football stadiums over the next few years. Although not officially reveled, the locations for the other three football stadiums are likely to be Keren, Assab and Massawa.
