Three Sisters Documentary
Belainesh Seyoum - NUEW |
Women in Eritrea are often depicted as Africa's most liberated sisterhood. However, in the Gash Barka region of Eritrea, some harmful traditional practices are still followed by women.
This documentary features three Eritrean women named Leyla Adem, Amina Ased Awed and Howa Mahmud Haj, who follow those traditional values. Although titled "Three sisters", the women featured in this IFAD and BBC presentation don't know one another, but do have a friend in common named Belainesh Seyoum; who is part of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW).
Belainesh was a former war veteran in Eritrea's independence struggle against Ethiopia. Her task now is to assist women such as Leyla, Amina and Howa, who all have to make tough decisions about continuing outdated cultural norms or breaking them in the hopes of a better future.

A true Eritrean story, I remember well your friend Bisirat a true martyer of the Eritrean revolution. I wish we had several such stories that does not distort our history of struggle and minimize the challenges we face today and the future. Brovo Belaynesh and God Bless your effort in helping our mothers, sisters and daughters to liberate themselves from bad cultures and move on to progress.
