When people discuss Eritrean natural resources, they often mention Gold, fisheries, gas or oil. However, Eritrea also has "mountains" of marble, granite and limestone deposits throughout Eritrea. In fact, Eritrea has been exporting these products for a few years now.
In 1993, Margran became the first Eritrean marble and granite company to come into operation after they reactivated an old Italian processing plant. In 1996, they opened a new modern marble and granite processing plant at Ghindae, and in 2002, they opened a granite quarry in Gheleb. The company currently staffs 180 employees.
In 2007, Margran company, which mainly operates from the Gogne quarry, produced 2500 meter cubes of granite and marble. In addition to Gogne quarry, the company has licences in ad Kertsekemete, Tickul, and Belta (Gheleb) quarries.
Margran exports its products to the Sudan and various European countries. In regards to the quality of the products they produce, the machine operator of the company, Berhane Haile stated, "we have one of the best marble qualities on earth. For example, our marble contains from 45 to 75 percent iron. Especially the black marble frond in the Debub (southern) and Gash Barka regions is of special quality," he noted.
The Gheleb Granite quarry, which was established in 2002, is located 135 kms (83 miles) from Asmara and 45 kms (27 miles) east of Keren (See last photo). It produces Belta red, Belta rose and Belta cream colored high-grade granite. The Gogne marble quarry is located 280 (173 miles) west of Asmara and produces an annual production of 10800 tones of white and grey types of marble.
