The Adeni Arabs of Eritrea
The Adeni Arabs, originally from the region of Aden in southern Yemen, live mostly in the port city of Massawa. Although an Arab people, the Adenis consider themselves a separate people. They apeak a distinct Arabic dialect called Ta'izzi-Adeni and are mostly Sunni Muslims.(1998, James Minahan, p.78) Adeni people are estimated to be less than 1% of Eritrea's population, numbering about 18,000 (1998, James Minahan, p.78). The Adeni people tend to be confused for the Rashaidas, who are also an Arab ethnic group that live near the Eritrean coast.
